I recently returned from a two-week vacation to the Outer Banks, NC with my husband, Kyle where we celebrated our 2 year anniversary. As always, it was magical.
The OBX holds a special place in our hearts. We got married on the beach in the OBX town of Corolla back in 2012 and held our reception in the back yard of a giant beach house where our closest friends and family joined to celebrate. Each year since, we have returned to spend our anniversary and each year we fall more and more in love with this place.
The following is an excerpt from a journal I kept while we were there:
Thursday, October 16th, 2014
Just got out of the shower, washed all the sand and salt from my body and hair after an afternoon at the beach. My belly is full of blue crab, fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and sweet tea. It's nearing the end of October and I'm wearing a swimsuit. I'm out on our balcony, watching the boats in the harbor, birds squawking overhead. The sky is a gorgeous light blue. The water a deep, sparkling navy. "God's blue jeans", we joked.
It truly is heavenly here. A relaxed, slower pace. A constant, gentle breeze. The clearest skies. Even the rainy days were beautiful in their own way. Watching the movement of the clouds reflected in the tumultuous shifting of the current in the water below. Watching nature happen right before my eyes.
Before, I was worried that two weeks would be too long. That we would run out of things to do. That we would be bored. But as it turns out, two weeks is exactly the right amount of time to fall in love with a place. Is it weird that this feels like home?
Needless to say, the Outer Banks (more specifically, Manteo, North Carolina) has made it to the top of our "Dream Places to Live" list. One day, I would love to call myself a beach local. Until then, I will keep chugging away, building my dream business and saving up my pennies to make it happen…
