My 29th Birthday
Some people look at birthdays with dread. They see it as another year older, another year slipped through their fingers. Sure, there are times when I think, "Holy cow! Where has the time gone!?" or when realize that I'm not quite where I thought I would be at this point in my life. But that's the magic of it, right? We never quite know where we'll end up...
Every year I welcome my birthday with open arms. Another year passed, yes, but another year that I got to live, experience, love, and learn. I use it as a day to reflect on the past year and to take inventory of my life as a whole-- the places I've gone, the people I've met, the ways I've grown. I'm left feeling joyful, grateful, and excited for the future.
This year I celebrated my 29th birthday on October 29th. I am past the age where all I want is a giant party and lots of presents. I prefer quality time with the ones I love, gifts of experience, and maybe a little wine to go with it. This year's celebration was perfect.
My husband, Kyle, surprised me when I woke up with a pumpkin spice latte, Autumn flowers, and a birthday card written from the heart. He knows that Fall is my favorite time of year so bonus points for going with that theme. Then he made us a delicious homemade breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns, and even (gasp!) cinnamon rolls (again, bonus points) and we headed to a local farm to pick out some pumpkins.
That evening we got all dolled up and went to a fancy-pants dinner at The Precinct, a local steakhouse. We indulged in an amazing steak dinner, overpriced wine, and conversation about what the future would hold. Our waiter even sang happy birthday to me. Not in a "TGI Friday's-bring-the-whole-staff-out-to-embarrass-you" way but a quiet serenade in a "you-never-would-have-expected-I'm-secretly-an-opera-singer" way. Amazing.
When we returned we noticed our kitchen light was on and our back door was wide open. "Oh no! Did we forget to lock up?!" To our surprise, my mom broke in while we were gone and cleaned our apartment from top to bottom! BEST. PRESENT. EVER. We finished the evening with my family, eating dessert made by my mom.
Simple, yes, but perfect.
A Special To-Do List
This year I knew I wanted to restart a tradition I did in past years where I would create a list of things I wanted to do before my next birthday. I used to do this each year, the number of items on the list matching my age (26 items on my 26th birthday, 27 on my 27th, etc.). I didn't do a list last year, as it was right around the time of my wedding and honeymoon and things were a bit hectic. These are so fun to do though, and very motivational throughout the year, so I'm back at it!
Here is my list of 29 Things to Do Before I'm 30! I plan to keep track as I go and write about some of them here on the blog. If you decide to do a similar list of your own, let me know-- I'd love to hear what's on your list too!
Now, where do I begin...
